If you plan to stay at a single beach and barely move, taxis or mototaxis can work out. But the moment you want to explore the coast — Mazunte, Zipolite, the lagoons, Huatulco — your own car pays for itself: you go at your own pace, carry whatever you want, and don't depend on finding a ride back.
For a multi-day stay exploring the area, renting usually comes out cheaper and far more comfortable than stacking up taxi trips.
